Brunson famously said that during his long poker
career, he faced players he called “hometown

their hometown and wanted to take a shot at the

become one of the most popular pastimes in
America, Brunson and his fellow pros have had to
shake off a few more hometown heroes in recent
years, especially in major tournaments, thanks
to an enormous system of both live and online
satellites that allow players to win their way

‘Know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em ...’
Texas hold’em ropes in action
By Kevin Patrick McCahill
Staff Writer
In a
packed and smoky lounge in Trapper’s Bar along Lake
Drive last Tuesday evening, over 50 card players sit
around seven green-felt-covered tables and try their
hardest not to grin when they are dealt a good hand.
The sound of chips stacking and the groans from losing
players punctuate the buzz of conversation moving
throughout the room.
From beginners to serious students, Texas hold ‘em has
caught on as the recreation of choice around the area.
Since June, Trapper’s has hosted a Texas hold ‘em
tournament every Tuesday night. Black Hat Productions
runs hold ‘em events around the metro area.

The law's poker face
Sarah McCann,
Star Tribune
August 24, 2005
First it was the 2 a.m. bar closing. Then it was
smoking bans. Now it's the poker game Texas Hold'em.
Inconsistency between state and local rules on all
three issues has helped some bar owners and hurt others.
Owners in Fridley recently asked city officials to
change the city's rules so their establishments can host
Texas Hold'em tournaments. The tournaments have been
allowed in Minnesota under certain conditions since June.
They are wildly popular, especially among young people.
But cities are allowed to be stricter than the state.
In Fridley, liquor license holders cannot have cards or
dice on their property.
